1 day in London? Your ultimate London itinerary!

So, you’ve got one day in London—a city so iconic, it’s basically the gold standard of cities. And yes, while London is huge, fear not! I’ve crafted the perfect 1-day London itinerary that’ll help you hit the highlights, keep your feet (relatively) happy, and maybe even leave room for a sneaky pint at a pub by the end of it all. Ready for the whirlwind? Let’s go!

Here are 5 things you won’t want to forget when travelling to London

Where to Stay

First things first: where you stay in London is crucial, especially if you’re only in town for a day. You don’t want to waste precious hours commuting from a suburb or lost on the Tube (though it’s all part of the adventure, really). Central London is where you’ll want to base yourself.

Consider staying near King’s Cross or St. Pancras International Station—convenient for Eurostar trips to Paris and Brussels, but also perfectly positioned for exploring London.

One of my favourites is the Megaro Hotel. It’s quirky, artsy, and just steps away from the Tube. Plus, you’re close enough to other top places in London like the British Museum or Regent’s Canal for an evening stroll. And as someone who used to live in London, trust me when I say: location is everything!

Practical Tips for the Perfect Day

  • Comfortable shoes: This itinerary has you covering a lot of ground—seriously, prepare for a decent bit of walking. You’ll thank me later when you’re admiring the view from the London Eye without blistered feet.
  • London Underground (The Tube): The best way to get around London in a day—it’s fast, efficient, and super easy to navigate once you get the hang of it.
  • Pre-book tickets: Wherever possible, book fast-track entry tickets to major tourist attractions in London like the Tower of London or Westminster Abbey. London’s great, but waiting in line? Not so much.

Alright, lace up those shoes, grab your Oyster card, and let’s dive into your one day itinerary!

Morning: Iconic Landmarks to Start Your Day

8:00 AM – Ready, Set, Go!

Yes, it’s early, but London is a city that rewards the early risers. Start your day with an amazing Full English Breakfast.

I would recommend going to one of the many greasy spoons the city is rich. Sure, you can have a posh breakfast but it is not as good or as authentic as one at a greasy spoon.

If you are heading to the Tower of London, check out De Vine – they do amazing fried breakfasts AND sandwiches if you want to save a few pounds on lunch.

If you are heading to Buckingham Palace try Regency Cafe which also does great breakfasts and bacon baps.

London Big Ben at 3:30

8:30 AM – The Big Decision: Tower of London or Buckingham Palace?

This is where your one day in London itinerary takes a crucial fork in the road. Depending on what you’re most excited about, you’ve got two stellar options:

Option 1: The Tower of London (Tower Hill Station)
Start off with the legendary Tower of London. You’ll need around two hours to fully appreciate its rich history—after all, this is where they keep the Crown Jewels, and who doesn’t want to gawk at massive diamonds?

Plus, the history of beheadings, medieval intrigue, and some serious architecture makes it one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. If you’re an early bird, you might even beat the crowds!

Option 2: Buckingham Palace (Victoria Station)
Or, if you’ve always dreamed of waving at the Queen (even though she’s probably not home), head to Buckingham Palace.

Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot for the Changing of the Guard at 10:45 AM. There’s something about the pomp and ceremony of it all that’s just so, well, British. Plus, you can take a beautiful stroll afterward through St. James’s Park as you make your way towards your next stop.

10:45 AM – Trafalgar Square

If you went the Buckingham Palace route, it’s time for a picturesque walk through St. James’s Park towards Trafalgar Square.

You’ll recognize Nelson’s Column, flanked by bronze lions and surrounded by classic London architecture. Snap a few photos, people-watch, or just bask in the lively atmosphere of this historic square. It’s a solid spot to pause and get your bearings.

Afternoon: Covent Garden, Westminster, and Beyond

11:00 AM – Lunch Around Trafalgar Square

Now, this might just be my favourite part of any day in London—lunch! Nearby, you’ll find loads of options from quick bites to charming pubs.

For something with a bit more character, I recommend heading to Covent Garden. It’s just a short walk, and once you arrive, you’ll see street performers, quaint market stalls, and more restaurants than you can shake a stick at.

12:30 PM – Covent Garden & Leicester Square

After lunch, take some time to stroll through Covent Garden—one of the hidden gems of London. There’s always something going on, whether it’s buskers doing magic tricks or live music filling the cobbled streets.

From there, make your way over to Leicester Square, where the entertainment buzz is palpable. It’s touristy, sure, but it’s also got that quintessential London atmosphere you can’t miss.

2:00 PM – The Westminster Walk

Here’s where things really start getting iconic. From Covent Garden, make your way toward Westminster—the home of Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and of course, Westminster Abbey.

This is one of the most iconic London landmarks, and the photo opportunities are endless. You’ll want to soak it all in, maybe even do a quick walking tour to get the full backstory on British politics and royalty.

Tip: If you’ve got time, it’s worth popping into Westminster Abbey for a visit. The history here is mind-blowing—coronations, royal weddings, and hundreds of years of British history are all wrapped up in this one glorious Gothic building. Pre-book your tickets though, because queues can be brutal.

3:30 PM – London Eye or The Shard?

Decisions, decisions!
For those who love a view of London, you’ve got two stellar options. The London Eye offers those picture-perfect panoramas of the city—perfect for spotting all the landmarks you’ve just ticked off your list.

Or, if you’re feeling extra fancy, head over to The Shard, one of the tallest buildings in Europe. Either way, you’re in for one of the best views in London.

Evening: South Bank Stroll and Dinner

White and Brown Sailing Ship

5:30 PM – South Bank Walk & Dinner

Post-photo op, take a leisurely walk along the South Bank. This area is a delightful mix of culture, art, and street life. You’ll pass by Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre—always a thrill for the literature buffs—before hitting the Tate Modern, one of the top museums in London for modern art lovers. Even if art’s not your thing, the views from its balcony are worth the quick stop!

Dinner:

The South Bank has plenty of options for dinner, ranging from street food stalls to fancy riverside restaurants. Grab whatever strikes your fancy and relax for a bit, soaking in the lively London atmosphere.

7:30 PM – Borough Market

If you’ve still got some energy left, make your way over to Borough Market. It’s a foodie’s paradise and one of London’s oldest markets, so expect plenty of gourmet snacks and street food to nibble on.

If you didn’t fill up at dinner, you’ll definitely find something here that’ll tempt you.

9:00 PM – End the Day at a Traditional London Pub

After a long day exploring, there’s no better way to end your time in London than with a pint at a cozy, traditional pub. You’re in the right city, after all. Pick one with history, charm, and maybe a fireplace, and toast to your perfect day in London!
